Music To Listen To: Walter Sickert and The Army of Broken Toys
I was introduced to them by a friend and I have to say these guys are really fresh and unique. For any fans of the genre unfamiliar with this band, when I first heard them they made me think of a blend of Abney Park and early Steam Powered Giraffe with a dash of experiment and chaos thrown in. But really, it’s unfair to compare them to anything else really because they are carving their own sound and their own path.
I was struck by the balance of beauty and restrained chaos. Seemlessly blending styles we’ve come to assosciate with the steampunk genre but also adding flare of blues, indie, cabaret, circus, gypsy and so much more.
Songs seep elegance and sophistication, whilst seeming other worldly as well. It’s almost like listening to tales from another plane of existence. I find myself transported and my imagination ignited. Fantastic range of instrumentation in this with the amazing vocal talents of Walter Sickert leading you on the journey through this bands world. The arrangements and production on these albums are breath taking and it’s easy to lose yourself for a while in the sound.
And while I’ve only dipped my toe into their impressive catalogue, I honestly think this is an amazing band that any steampunk or non-steampunk fan should check out.
Please look the band up. I’m really enjoying discovering their work and I highly recommend them.
I suggest starting with Soft Time Traveller:
